Arrested by USF Police? | Attorney Ron Frey

If you or a friend or family member was arrested by the University of South Florida Police Department, it helps to understand what happens next. USF Police are a full law enforcement agency that patrols the USF Tampa campus and nearby areas, and their arrests are criminal cases, not just school matters. People arrested by USF Police are generally booked into the Hillsborough County jail system, and their cases are heard in the Hillsborough County courts.
Attorney Ron Frey’s office is in downtown Tampa, and he represents college students charged after USF Police arrests. Call or text (813) 775-2276 or (844) 766-3739 for a free, confidential consultation.
What to Expect After a USF Police Arrest
After a USF Police arrest, the person is usually taken to the Orient Road Jail for booking. A first appearance before a judge generally happens within 24 hours, and that’s where bond and release conditions are addressed. The case then goes to the Hillsborough County courts in downtown Tampa, either the Edgecomb Courthouse or the Courthouse Annex, depending on the charge.
USF Police make arrests for charges such as underage drinking, fake IDs, drug possession, theft, battery, and DUI. A criminal charge can sometimes lead to a separate student conduct process, and Attorney Ron Frey can help with that as well, depending on the case. Attendance at court dates is often required and should be assumed mandatory unless the court or your attorney explicitly says otherwise.
About USF and the University Police
The University of South Florida’s main campus is in North Tampa. USF says its campuses together have nearly 50,000 students, based on fall 2025 enrollment.
USF’s University Police are based at 4202 E. Fowler Avenue on the Tampa campus. They are sworn officers, and the cases they file go to the Hillsborough County courts like any other arrest.
