Arrested by Florida Highway Patrol? | Attorney Ron Frey
If you or a friend or family member was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol, it helps to understand what happens next. FHP troopers patrol Florida’s interstates and highways, including I-4, I-75, and I-275 through Tampa Bay. An FHP arrest is booked into the county jail where it happened, and the case is heard in that county’s courts.
Attorney Ron Frey represents clients charged after FHP arrests in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and surrounding counties. Call or text (813) 775-2276 or (844) 766-3739 for a free, confidential consultation.
What to Expect After an FHP Arrest
After an FHP arrest, the trooper takes the person to the county jail where the arrest happened. That’s the Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough and the Pinellas County Jail in Pinellas. A first appearance before a judge generally happens within 24 hours, and that’s where bond and release conditions are addressed. The case then goes to that county’s courts.
FHP troopers make arrests for DUI, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of a crash, and drug charges that come out of traffic stops. A DUI arrest can also bring a separate driver’s license suspension with its own short deadline. Attendance at court dates is often required and should be assumed mandatory unless the court or your attorney explicitly says otherwise. Talking with an attorney early can protect your rights.
About Troop C of the Florida Highway Patrol
In the Tampa Bay area, the Florida Highway Patrol works out of Troop C, headquartered at 11305 N. McKinley Drive in Tampa. Troop C covers seven counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Citrus, and Sumter.
The troop has five districts: Tampa, Pinellas Park, Land O’ Lakes, Brooksville, and Lakeland. The Pinellas Park station is at 6855 62nd Avenue North. A ticket or arrest by a trooper goes to court in the county where it happened, so an arrest on I-275 in Pinellas goes to Pinellas County court, while one on I-4 in Hillsborough goes to Hillsborough County court.
