Citrus County Courts: The Fifth Judicial Circuit

Citrus County is part of Florida’s Fifth Judicial Circuit, which also covers Hernando, Lake, Marion, and Sumter Counties. The Office of the State Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit prosecutes state charges. Felony cases are heard in Circuit Court, and misdemeanors and criminal traffic cases, including most DUIs, are heard in County Court.

Citrus County’s criminal cases are heard at the Citrus County Courthouse, 110 North Apopka Avenue in Inverness. The historic Old Courthouse nearby now houses a museum; make sure your court notice points you to the right building.

Who Makes Arrests in Citrus County

Citrus County has two incorporated cities, Inverness and Crystal River. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency for the whole county, including both cities. Federal agents may be involved in computer, fraud, and drug investigations.

People arrested in Citrus County are booked into the Citrus County Detention Facility, 2604 West Woodland Ridge Drive in Lecanto. Under Florida’s rules, a person who is held must see a judge within 24 hours of arrest for a first appearance. Calling a lawyer early means someone can be speaking for you at that hearing.

Pretrial Intervention and Drug Court

Florida law allows pretrial intervention for some first-time offenders charged with a misdemeanor or a third-degree felony, with the consent of the State Attorney and others. If the program is completed, the charges are dismissed. The Fifth Circuit State Attorney’s Office also uses diversion programs for some cases.
