North Carolina Criminal Defense Lawyer for Computer, Internet & AI Crimes

Attorney Ron Frey of The Frey Law Firm, PLLC is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and is admitted to the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of North Carolina. He is experienced in state and federal criminal courts and has over 20 years of criminal defense experience.
In North Carolina, his focus is computer, internet, and AI-related investigations, especially for people who have never been in trouble before. If you are under investigation or have been charged, call before you talk to anyone: (813) 775-2276 or toll-free (844) 766-3739. Your consultation is free and confidential. Rapid response, 24/7.
Computer, Internet, and AI Cases
Attorney Frey defends people in North Carolina facing:
- Computer and internet crime investigations and charges, including cases that start with an online report, a search warrant for phones and computers, or records obtained from a technology company
- AI-related investigations, including deepfakes, AI-generated sexual content, voice cloning, and AI-assisted scams
- First-time accusations, where early decisions can shape everything that follows
Digital cases are built on digital evidence, and that evidence deserves scrutiny. Attorney Frey looks at how it was collected, whether the searches were lawful, what the forensic facts actually show, and what the government would have to prove. He can work with independent forensic examiners when the evidence calls for it. Learn more about computer and internet crime defense, or visit our national site, InternetCrime.com.
Federal Court in North Carolina
Many computer, internet, and AI cases are federal. Attorney Frey is admitted in two of North Carolina’s federal districts.
Eastern District of North Carolina
The Eastern District covers 44 counties, from the Raleigh area to the coast. Its four divisions are headquartered in Raleigh (Western Division), Greenville (Eastern Division), Wilmington (Southern Division), and Elizabeth City (Northern Division). Court is also held in New Bern and Fayetteville.
Western District of North Carolina
The Western District covers 32 counties in the western part of the state, including Mecklenburg and Buncombe. The court sits in Charlotte, Asheville, and Statesville, and also holds court in Bryson City and Shelby.
Federal investigations often run quietly for months. The first sign may be a search warrant, a target letter, or agents asking to “just talk.” Federal cases have their own rules and sentencing guidelines, and an early detention hearing can shape the rest of the case.
State Court in North Carolina
Not every case is federal. In North Carolina, misdemeanors are heard in District Court, felonies in Superior Court, and the local District Attorney prosecutes state charges. For some first-time offenders, North Carolina law allows deferred prosecution or a conditional discharge for misdemeanors and lower-level (Class H and I) felonies. Strict eligibility rules apply, and none of it is automatic.
